Making memories with the kids--Real Madrid v. Manchester United @ Michigan Stadium |
I found a poem today by Gary Oliver and it resonates on many levels, but it definitely speaks to what I'd like my children to be able to say they learned from me someday. Oliver says it better than me, so I'll get to the poem...
"For the Children"
By Gary Oliver
The rising hills, the slopes,
of statistics
lie before us,
the steep climb
of everything, going up,
up, as we all
go down.
In the next century
or the one beyond that,
they say,
are valleys, pastures,
we can meet there in peace
if we make it.
Read the rest of the poem (the ending's worth it!!!) at The Writer's Almanac. If you like it as much as I do, you'll probably find yourself reading it several times.
Glad to make a return to Poetry Friday, which today is being rounded up at A Year of Reading. Check out all the other amazing posts being shared there today.
You're right -- the ending is worth it! Good advice!!
ReplyDeleteLove the wise advice at the end of this poem! Sounds like you have done the important stuff this summer!
ReplyDeleteLove the photo with you and your kids, Ben! You look like a happy bunch. The Gary Snyder poem is a wonderful parental aspiration.

That is such an uplifting message. I love being a parent too. :) That photograph is precious.
I know what you mean about wondering sometimes about this parenting thing... the time together is so precious, isn't it? Thank you for sharing the poem... great advice for parents and nonparents alike!
ReplyDeleteLove this poem and love this reminder. Being a parent is what I was put on this planet for. Great picture! = )
